In the chronic phase after myocardial infarction, occluded coronary arteries recanalize spontaneously in about 10-20% of cases, and in some instances this is observed even after several years. With successful revascularization, a disturbance of contraction can regress to varying degrees; restoration of completely normal contraction amplitude may even be observed. In relative terms this is most likely with hypokinesia in the infarcted region, with akinesia this is only a moderate possibility and if dyskinesia is present it is unlikely to occur.
