Acute occlusion of the extremities is the sudden or very quick development of complete arterial blood flow artery by an embolism or acute thrombosis. Clinically, all grades of severity from asymptomatic occlusion to acute ischemia are possible, depending on the existing level of collateral formation and the significance of the blood vessel affected. This is usually an emergency! The revascularization options available are catheter procedures (local lysis, catheter embolectomy) and surgery (thrombectomy, embolectomy, bypass procedures). Embolisms and acute thromboses of the popliteal artery, trifurcation and the arteries of the lower leg are usually better treated with local lysis, occlusions of the pelvic arteries and the femoral artery by surgery. The source of the embolism must be sought in all cases. |
