Urologic Surgery

In patients undergoing urologic surgery, venous thromboembolism is considered the most common nonsurgical complication. Approximately 1 to 5% of urologic surgery patients experience symptomatic DVT. Factors that have been shown to increase the risk of DVT are similar to those in general surgery and include open procedures, malignancy, increased age, general anesthetic, and duration of the procedure. Nevertheless, at the moment, there are no recently published studies that address the optimal prophylaxis regiment for urologic surgery patients. The current guidelines recommend stratifying the risk corresponding to patients undergoing general surgey.
